I never get my fun with a girl who couldn’t rough it Posing in bed like she’s selling perfume Life is full of pain and she’s got to rise above it My future shouldn’t swing from a noose Keep my sutures (loose) Keepin’ it (cool) To this I will be true Keep my sutures loose Lots of love don’t come when you really really need it Lots never came in my early career I hate my rock and roll when I know where it’s going I’m keeping our sutures loose Keep my sutures (loose) Keepin’ it (cool) To this I will be true Keep my sutures loose solo Give me something weird Kind of thirsty on destruction All I want is some flesh on the bone Don’t fill my ears with the should of, could of, would ofs Let’s bring our future home Our home is the great unknown You’ll never get your fun if you’re too afraid to rough it I’m partial to the dreamers, and that’s the hard truth Life is full of pain, HEY! let’s rise above it Keep our sutures (loose) Keepin’ it (cool) To this I will be true Let's keep my sutures loose Talk about the future loose Let's keep our sutures loose

I never made a threat I can't keep I didn't talk tough to hear myself speak I said what I feel was real And that's all So don't be frightened when you acquiesce When we plant the bomb in your dress Searching for a fuse we can use To blow minds I'm gonna cut your groove right on time I'm gonna cut your groove baby every time Right on time now I come on like clockwork girl With a word I'll change your world If I cut your groove you're gonna move right now To people never ever doing what they say Who sleep at night thinking that's OK Thinking we're fooled. It’s not cool And that's all So don't be shy when I'm behind your lines Feeling things nobody finds Things about you we will use To feel good I'm gonna cut your groove right on time I'm gonna cut your groove baby every time Right on time girl I come on like clockwork girl Without a word I'll change your world If I cut your groove you're gonna move right now I'm gonna cut your groove right on time I'm gonna cut your groove baby every time Right on time girl I come on like clockwork girl Without a word I'll change your world If I cut your groove you're gonna move right now I'm gonna cut your groove right on time Baby, baby, baby I'm gonna cut your groove baby every time Yes I am I come on like clockwork girl Without a word I'll smoke your world If I cut your groove you're gonna move right now

Sleep is all I need It should come naturally I’m lost when I’m awake I’ll toss this way and that Stare at where you slept And think of bitter sweet I can’t sleep Knowing I’ll never sleep beside you I can’t dream No ‘Cause my dream’s to live my life around you There’s no peace, no, no peace for me Sun down fills up with dread A pill to fix my head I’m carrying that weight I can’t sleep Knowing I’ll never sleep beside you I can’t dream No ‘Cause my dream’s to live my life around you For me there’ll be no peace, no, no peace for me Sleep Then suddenly a footfall, on a floorboard In a staircase, post haste, no! You leaving without saying goodbye No goodbye, no good, then why’d You gave me your love You gave me love You showed me your love I wish I could sleep Knowing I’ll never sleep beside you I’ll never dream No ‘Cause my dream is to live my life around you For me there’ll be no peace, no, no peace for me My head may never rest Till I feel your caress And you whisper sweetly sleep

Illumination 03:41
She's not what you'd find in the magazines Born to the ordinary world I've had my share of the shinier things But finery don't make this girl Such beauty she shines on me She doesn't turn heads with a toss of her hair Moves in diminutive ways Says that she feels like a brown paper bag And can't understand why I stay Such beauty she shines on me So bright naked eyes can't see Blink and you’d walk right by Illumination She doesn’t take cues from the televee She don’t want what everyone has She says close your eyes if you want to be free And see all the beauty I have Such beauty she shines on me So bright naked eyes can't see Blink and you’d walk right by Illumination Shine on Shine on Shine on Illumination…

No Surprise 03:10
Now I can’t understand why you treat me like you do I’d re-arrange the stars Mine becomes ours And I can’t comprehend these amazing stunts you pull You leave me with a thrill But I know what’s coming next No surprise No surprise No surprise No surprise What’s wrong now? I hate that look in your eyes You just say the word and I’ll be out of your life for good That’s not what I want to do But I know what’s coming next No surprise No surprise No surprise No surprise What’s wrong now? I hate that look in your eyes You say the word, I’ll be out of your life for good That’s not what I want to hear But I know what’s coming next No surprise

u keep that saying that you’ll call but I’m no longer on your shortlist If I ask you why you’d act like you don’t know truth is I’m petrified You’ll never really say goodbye & then my heart gets broken nice and slow • Oh I spend too much time • Wondering why • All in love’s not fair • Come to the conclusion • It’s better not to Care I’d make every day your birthday Sing you songs like Monday Monday And cook you dinner by the sea If you’d only put your books down Stop telling’ me the world’s round Lift your eyes and notice me Oh I spend too much time. Wondering why All in love’s not fair. Shoulda seen signs There were So many signs. Sayin we never had a prayer I spend too much time. Pretending you’ll be there • Come TO the conclusion. It’s better Not To Care ⁃ (Then I’d be) Someone who can flick a heart switch ⁃ Turn it on and turn it off so easy ⁃ Someone who can resist the urge ⁃ And quit it when they’re in it so completely…. Well I guess I’ll let you go It’s gettin late and you have no idea I don’t want to go through this again Maybe we’re just better off as friends • There’s just no solution. It’s Better Not To Care

As I look across the room at you Our eyes are joined for just a breath or two I never finish what I mean to do I start to trail off when I'm halfway through And I fall inside your eyes And I'm drowning in your love But I cannot bring to my mind What it was that I was thinking of I can feel each sigh with my back to you As though this sigh were mine and I'm attached to you It’s deep inside your eyes that I'm attracted to Like a moth towards a light I can't stop my headlong flight And I fall inside your eyes Oh I'm drowning in your love But I cannot bring to my mind What it was that I was thinking of The sounds inside the room seem to fade away But I don't think that I was listening anyway I know I can't explain just why I feel this way But just one look from you and there's nothing I can do And I fall inside your eyes And I'm drowning in your love But I cannot bring to my mind What it was that I was thinking of

You moved to Manhattan Like a moth toward light Dreams gathered around you But something didn’t look right You were one in a million But then millions of people made plans They make it look so easy From the outside looking in I’m invisible, you’re invisible, did we stare at the sun for too long? We watched our best years disappear Now we’re invisible in love Watching you unpack boxes And putting all your stuff on shelves If we’d have looked in the mirror We wouldn’t have recognized ourselves ‘Cuz I’m invisible, you’re invisible, did we stare at the sun for too long? Oh a hundred years, all but disappear Now we’re invisible in love I’ve got a solution To keep love strong To keep us both turned on A cocktail of delusion Meets skin on skin To keep the walls from closing in You said it wasn’t electric Just something you turn off and on But, here comes the unexpected It was fading all along I’m invisible, you’re invisible, oh it’s criminal what we’ve become Nothing's right or clear, like was it ever here, did a tree fall in the woods alone? Oh I'm invisible, you're invisible, it's a poison we don't drink alone. You can't taste or hear it just disappears in a bright white flash and it gone. ‘Cuz we're invisible, we're invisible, we stared straight at the sun for too long. We watched as our best years, vanished to thin air, now we’re invisible in love

Face the sun Taste the rain Savor heeling Touch your pain To take the middle road Is to live, not at all You'll know love Once you feel it all Ride the wind Sink in the sea Holler rage Practice peace To take the middle road Is to live, not at all You'll know love Once you’ve lived it all Have no fear You'll find love… Be together (Be together) Be alone (Be alone) Walk in circles (Walk in circles) Seek the unknown (Seek the unknown, the unknown) To take the middle road Is to live, not at all You'll know love Once you feel it all You'll feel love Once you've lived it all

about

Willie Wisely takes listeners to the fiery star and back on his brave new album “Face The Sun”. His eighth studio, produced with longtime collaborator John Fields. Available May 1, 2020 on ella-USA/Kool Kat Musik.

Wisely's first full-length since 2012’s “True”, he has spent 7 years emerging from growing a young family in the peaceful sanctuary and musical hotbed of Laurel Canyon in the Hollywood Hills.

Feeling the influences of his epic former and present neighbors Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Three Dog Night, The Turtles, The Doors, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Love, and all the British groups who visited there in the 60’s to pay fealty (including The Beatles and The Rolling Stones), Wisely has concocted (in a mere 9 songs) a musical voyage so tasteful and honorific of his heroes, that it can only be heard as an open love letter to the music that churns his soul. And you will hear/feel every bit of his affection for the music of this undeniable golden age – and his basement bursting vinyl collection.

Wisely travels to the source of his life’s work (the sun, if you will) and pulls us through and back past a universe of emotions. Whether it’s the unhinged joy of the two opening tracks “Cut Your Groove” and “Sutures Loose” or their lamenting pedal-steel-drenched counterparts “I Can’t Sleep” and “Fall Inside Your Eyes” the new album will move you through Wisely’s tricky life balance of shameless whimsical passion and the deepest commitment to family and love.

If you’re seeking a through line for this adventure, it’s two distinctly feminine textures in the form of, yes, female vocalists, and also the ubiquity of the pedal steel on nearly every track. Even the dizzyingly psychedelic “Illumination” has one. No fewer than four pedal steel players appear on this one LP (touché Nashville!). Yet “Face The Sun” never really speaks the country vernacular, but definitely does convey the quotidian compassions of a country classic. It's summed up nicely in a stanza from “Illumination”:

She doesn’t turn heads with the toss of her hair
Moves in diminutive ways
Says that she feels like a brown paper bag
And can’t understand why I stay
Such beauty she shines on me

While the album harkens to Wisely’s first classic long-player “She” (1996) with its ebullient pop rock, it also shows Wisely’s undying passion for risk taking and raw ambition. A hidden gem arrives in the form of a six-minute pop music symphony called “Invisible In Love”, written with Philadelphia’s everywhere-boy Cliff Hillis. The song begins as a spacious ode to a break up in the harsh climes of Manhattan. It serves up CSN’s “Déjà vu” era but then suddenly edges into an almost-silence with little but the effervescent vocals of L.A.’s peerless songstress Kelly Jones filling your ears. Then it kicks in hard, and then slows all the way down to zero tempo, then to whispers and then builds up again into a tidal wave of bold, rocking sound, finishing with the all-but forgotten studio technique of the long fade out.

Emotional devastation comes in the form of “It’s Better Not To Care” written by Wisely with Platinum songwriter Shelly Peiken and features the brutal, sassy vocalizations of LA’s soon-to-be-on-everybody’s-lips girl Sie Sie Benhoff.

Oh I, spend all my time
Wondering why all in love’s not fair
I should have seen signs, so many signs
Sayin’ that we never had a prayer
Oh I, spend all my time
Buildin’ castles in the air
Come to the conclusion
Woah it’s better not to care

“Fall Inside Your Eyes” is a rare unexpected cover from Wisely that is so obscure, and so completely emotionally owned by the singer, that Wisely would do well to simply claim that he wrote it. It is in fact written by lost-to-history Beatles acolyte Jackie Lomax. Despite being one of the “first four” signings to Apple Records; despite George Harrison writing Jackie’s debut single and producing the entire album; despite the Beatles all adoring Jackie and playing on the album along with L.A.’s Wrecking Crew, Jackie’s debut album absolutely tanked! Wisely has arrived exactly 50 years after its release to tease out the genius of the scene, and frankly outdoing Lomax’ original by quite a few yards.

The closing title track fittingly summarizes Wisely’s entire light-emitting adventure on “Face The Sun”, in a short Lennon-esque chorus:

To take the middle road
Is to live, not at all
You'll know love
Once you feel it all

about

Willie Wisely Saint Paul, Minnesota

Equal parts Minnesotan music scene veteran and Laurel Canyon resident/devotee, Willie Wisely remains that rare bird mixing profound power pop with arena-sized showmanship, a troubadour on an all night rave up, a cold kombucha on a hot California day, a McCartney-ite taking a break from his Japanese import of “Ram” for a quick Canyon run listening to João Gilberto. ... more
