No Surprise

about

The most recent recorded version of "No Surprise" is dedicated to my friend and collaborator Ed Ackerson. He produced and played on the track. In the studio Ed brought the best out of everyone. But on this take my acoustic guitar playing wasn't cutting it. I was hitting the strings too hard, or too soft, or tugging the thing out of tune. I remember getting frustrated and thinking, "Why am I struggling with this when there's a great guitarist on the other side of the glass?" I asked Ed to grab an ax. He got in front of the mic and we had it in one take. He taught me a lot at those sessions, just like he taught me in the mid 80's (in our teens) how to get booked in the 7th St. Entry. He encouraged all of my early projects, sent me on my first regional tour, praised all my early cassette releases and he brought preternatural wisdom (and awesome vocabulary) to everything musical. I miss knowing he's in Minneapolis, keeping a light burning at Flowers Studio for musicians everywhere. RIP Ed.
If this version of "No Surprise" from my new album "Face The Sun" sounds at all like The Jayhawks it’s also, if indirectly, because of Ed. Read that story at my blog and see you here tomorrow for a deeper dive into "No Surprise".

lyrics

Now I can’t understand why you treat me like you do
I’d re-arrange the stars
Mine becomes ours

And I can’t comprehend these amazing stunts you pull
You leave me with a thrill
But I know what’s coming next
No surprise

No surprise
No surprise
No surprise
What’s wrong now?
I hate that look in your eyes

You say the word, I’ll be out of your life for good
That’s not what I want to do
But I know what’s coming next
No surprise

No surprise
No surprise
No surprise
What’s wrong now?
I hate that look in your eyes

You say the word, I’ll be out of your life for good
That’s not what I want to hear
But I know what’s comin’ next
Yeah I know what’s comin’ next
Yeah I know what’s comin’ next
No surprise

Willie Wisely Saint Paul, Minnesota

Equal parts Minnesotan music scene veteran and Laurel Canyon resident/devotee, Willie Wisely remains that rare bird mixing profound power pop with arena-sized showmanship, a troubadour on an all night rave up, a cold kombucha on a hot California day, a McCartney-ite taking a break from his Japanese import of “Ram” for a quick Canyon run listening to João Gilberto. ... more
