No Surprise (Songwriting Demos)

Track four on the EP goes furthest back in time to 1992, with a couple songwriting idea tapes spliced together. They were recorded at my dad’s house in San Rafael, CA and at home in Dinkytown, Minneapolis. I was fairly confident where my ancient idea cassettes would be found but wasn't sure if this song would be captured. It was! Ironically, its always the old CDR's that don't play, but dusty cassettes keep truckin'. Listening back, the biggest realization is that the fingerpicked guitar and the chord changes I'd ultimately rejected for No Surprise would unconsciously become Vagabond – a song that wouldn’t be written for another couple years for the "She" album in 1996! Later in the demo you can hear the change in the guitar rhythm to more of a Motown feel, which thankfully brought the song out of that mopey zone. From there it was clear this No Surprise would fly high with a full-band arrangement. And for years it has as a staple of our set list.
