No Surprise (Strawberrius Remix)

about

Track two is from my 1993 "Parlez-Vous Français?" album, recently remixed by John Fields. When the band and I went into the studio, people had been digging this new song at our gigs. Probably because they subconsciously understood the truth of it. The lyric was about getting cheated on. You’d probably assume it was directed at a lover. But it was actually written to the guys in the band. It made me crazy when they were moonlighting with other groups. I was totally a bad boyfriend right? And wanted them all to myself, for practice, recording and touring – a schedule I kept brisk, sometimes 150 shows a year. It seems possessive and maniacal in retrospect but back in the 1990's I was a selfish bastard, and batting for the other team seemed wrong. Maybe you can hear my frustration in the gi-normous guitar solo (which took probably two hours to perfect). Recorded as Ezra Gold engineered, always with his unflappable patience and levity.

lyrics

Now I can’t understand why you treat me like you do
I’d re-arrange the stars
Mine becomes ours

And I can’t comprehend these amazing stunts you pull
You leave me with a thrill
But I know what’s coming next
No surprise

No surprise
No surprise
No surprise
What’s wrong now?
I hate that look in your eyes

You say the word, I’ll be out of your life for good
That’s not what I want to do
But I know what’s coming next
No surprise

No surprise
No surprise
No surprise
What’s wrong now?
I hate that look in your eyes

You say the word, I’ll be out of your life for good
That’s not what I want to hear
But I know what’s comin’ next, no surprise
Yeah I know what’s comin’ next, no surprise
Yeah I know what’s comin’ next, no surprise

about

Willie Wisely Saint Paul, Minnesota

Equal parts Minnesotan music scene veteran and Laurel Canyon resident/devotee, Willie Wisely remains that rare bird mixing profound power pop with arena-sized showmanship, a troubadour on an all night rave up, a cold kombucha on a hot California day, a McCartney-ite taking a break from his Japanese import of “Ram” for a quick Canyon run listening to João Gilberto. ... more
